While talking to a friend and fan of Sleeping Horse Pills recently, we discovered a mutual interest in photographs of dead animals. Odessa B. Parker is a photography enthusiast, without any pretense of creating art. What follows is a small gallery of some pretty pictures she's taken of roadkill. What I like about these images is that she has (for the most part) approached the subjects in a way that makes it appear as if she quietly crept up to these animals and photographed them as they slept peacefully. They appear almost as taxidermy rather than gory roadkill.
It reminds me of when John Lurie took Jim Jarmusch fishing for the first episode of Fishing With John and Jarmusch says something about the morality of fishing. Lurie, barely able to contain the smirk on his face argues that "we wouldn't be able to see them otherwise". It's a brilliant moment and you can see Jarmusch flail as he back peddles from his out of character, politically correct statement.
Miss Parker asked me to include some pictures from my own collection of roadkill shots and so I've tacked a few onto the end. Be sure to check out her small bio on the Partners In Crime link located in the right hand column of the homepage. Regardless of how you feel about dead animals, pictures or pictures of dead animals, try to enjoy these opportunities to study a few creatures that we may not be able to really see otherwise.
